Sensationalist headline I know but it caught your attention didn’t it? What do you expect a non-self promoting man or woman to do without the aid of a selfie-stick then hey, in this day and age? Well, I will explore that concept below.
On a personal note, yesterday’s blog post highlighted winners at 5/1, 9/2 and 17/2. Those on top of a 50/1 winner on Sunday (no bells or whistles were rung for that) and successes at Ayr on Monday – and all for free!
I was sad to read yesterday that long term horse racing blogger Roy Waterhouse was considering packing in all together, citing a massive drop in visitor numbers.
Now Roy has been around for a long time. Pre-twitter, Roy already had an online presence with his excellent blog, handy PDF’s and website- a truly great resource for those avid horse racing fans out there – especially NH ones.
I too have every sympathy with Roy on the issue of declining visitor stats. Only last week I did my own analysis on the last ten years of visitor numbers and it made for some depressing reading…
Gone are the days when bookmakers and affiliates used to approach me every pre-Cheltenham Festival build up period and ask “Can you run this, can you post that?” Apparently this blog was right up there 10 years ago on the Google Analytical spectrum for the phrase “Cheltenham Festival” – sponsors couldn’t get enough of me! But alas, Twitter mushroomed in its popularity and blogs like mine and Roy’s, Wayward Lad, Dave Massey, Adam Norman, to name a few have been consigned to the sidelines and the periphery of horse racing information sources.
As things have slowly declined on the blog scene over the years, I have changed my own methods on here too. I have dropped the long narratives, basically because not enough people were reading it, and gone for selections only supported by racecourse news and official going tweets from some of the associated sources. It gives the blog post a “modern” feel each day and keeps the visitor numbers ticking over somewhat, but nothing like those halcyon days before the emergence and expansion of Twitter.
Modern racing fans don’t search out dinosaurs like me any more, they want instant information from the likes of “Racing Blogger” (oh, the irony of that name) and such like – it’s just the way things are now.
Real bloggers however will still battle on regardless and maybe one day we’ll come back to prominence? We still love the game and have many years of knowledge and that’s a good enough reason to carry on and share our racing thoughts with you, our readership.
Just remember to pop by to all of our blogs over the forthcoming Cheltenham Festival and these old heads may still be able to bring you a nice priced winner or two!
