It’s Paddy Power Gold Cup day (formerly the Mackeson Gold Cup) and I have fond memories of this race during the period from being a 13yo boy to a 23yo man. The period I refer to (1986-1996) are listed on the honours list below. I was a 10p win backer of Very Promising in 1986 thanks to my late Grandad, a 6th Form sweepstake winner in 1990 with Multum In Parvo and a Tipping Tim groupie in 1992. Alas my 2000-10 years were mainly barren ones as I was never a Martin Pipe backer. In fact more fool me I consciously went out of my way to oppose those Pipe Saturday runners.
Some parity was brought back to the situation last year when at the last minute (after Divers was declared a non-runner) I switched my allegiance to Al Ferof. Sadly that horse then had a an injury setback later in the season.
We all have our personal memories of particular races in specific years and we all have anecdotes to go along with them. That’s why I find NH racing so endearing and a joy to watch.
Just one winner on Friday at Cheltenham when Taquin Du Seuil (A P McCoy, 3/1) won a strangely run affair. Not that TDS backers are complaining mind.
Today’s Cheltenham fancies:
12.40 Chelt- Guitar Pete (e/w).
1.15 Chelt- Shutthefrontdoor (win).
1.50 Chelt- Spring Heeled & Knockara Beau (e/w).
2.30 Chelt- Hidden Cyclone & Ballynagour (e/w).
3.00 Chelt- Edmund Kean & Araldur (e/w).
3.35 Chelt- Indevan (e/w).
4.05 Chelt- Bull and Bush & Fairytale Theatre (e/w).
