Hennessy Gold Cup 2014

I'm a racing celebrity get me out of here.

I’m a racing celebrity get me out of here.

Farcical three runner races run at an equally farcical pace have been the order of the week and as you may have noticed I haven’t blogged since Tuesday. The reason I haven’t blogged has been the woeful field sizes over the last few days. Even Newbury was poor in terms of field sizes on the first two days. It really hasn’t been worth the effort getting involved and as a diehard NH fan it really saddens me that the sport is scraping the barrel somewhat of late.

Today we return to a bit of normality with some good competitive Saturday racing but is this going to be the future? Good racing on a Saturday only?

Today’s Newbury fancies:

12.20 Newb- A Doll In Milan (e/w).

12.50 Newb- Jumps Road (e/w).

1.20 Newb- Bobcatbilly & Baby Shine (e/w).

1.50 Newb- Albert Bridge (e/w).

2.25 Newb- More Of That (win).

3.00 Newb- Smad Place, Le Reve & Houblon Des Obeaux (in various combinations).

3.35 Newb- Arthur’s Secret (e/w).

Pick 6! 😉

On the seventh day

HenTipChallYou may have heard that I did rather well in the Skybet sponsored Hennessy Tipping Competition over the last three days but especially yesterday when the above entry catapulted me from being amongst the also rans to the prize positions in both the overall and daily competitions.

However I’ve got to say that from being elated after the end of racing at Newbury yesterday, after receiving my prize notification email I began to realise that the prizes were in fact a wolf dressed up in sheep’s clothing. I hate to sound ungrateful but £50 free bet vouchers that have to be used in their entirety on single events with no splitting are essentially 50/50 toss of the coin jobs and are not how I bet at all. I can understand why the bookmakers offer them as a prize. They look like substantial amounts of money but in reality they are massively loaded in the bookmakers favour. If you’re lucky enough to overcome the actual first hurdle of winning with a single voucher you then have your stake deducted. Backing anything under even money is a waste of time unless it’s only just under evens. They have you by the short and curlies.

I do tend to swerve competitions were the prizes are bet vouchers that you cannot split. Unfortunately when you enter some competitions the bookmaker “free bet” rules are not stipulated and until you go to their website to use their prize you are unaware of the conditions. Vouchers or promo cash that you can split has become increasingly rare over the years. I wonder why that is? 😀

Valdez (R Thornton, 2/1), Vendor (Jack Doyle, 16/1) & Celestial Halo (D Jacob, 7/2) provided us with three nice winners here on the blog yesterday.

No selections today as I’m charity dog walking. See you back here Monday.

dogWoof! 😉
