Derby Day 2021 (Epsom)

Today’s Derby Day fancies from my 888sport blog:

Expert Picks Derby Day 2021

2.00 Epsom – King Frankel (WIN)

After flopping on his debut run at Wolverhampton on their all-weather surface, this son of Frankel hasn’t looked back since he started racing on the turf and is yet to finish out of the top two.

His two runs at Pontefract in April will put him in good stead for a decent showing at Epsom, and at 2/1 in our 888sport horse racing betting he looks like a solid win bet under his jockey Ben Curtis.

The dangers on paper appear to be from the previous Epsom scorer Patient Dream with Oisin Murphy getting the leg up and Roger Varian’s Greatgadian.

2.35 Epsom – Maamora (NAP)

If the Crisford-trained Maamora can run up to the form that she showed when beating a decent field of fillies in last season’s Atalanta Stakes then she could be hard to peg back here.

She was only fifth on her seasonal return at Goodwood, but within 1¾ lengths of the winner Illykato and she looks sure to come on for the run.

Illykato is highly likely to be in the mix once again here, as should Posted who ran with plenty of consistency last term and has Jim Crowley on board.

3.10 Epsom – Bell Rock (E/W)

Another exciting renewal of the Diomed Stakes and this year it can go the way of Bell Rock for the Andrew Balding stable.

Back to winning ways at Newmarket last time, he’s been kept very sweet at home and connections are expecting a big run. This race is a step up in class for him now but he appears to be a horse on the up and should give a good account of himself.

Of the others, dropping back to a mile should not be a problem for Maximal who won over a similar trip at Sandown last September. *Non-Runner*

3.45 Epsom – Pettochside & Duke Of Firenze (E/W)

They might both be twelve-year-old veterans but at 25/1 the pair in our 888sport online betting market, Pettochside and Duke Of Firenze are too big to ignore in this wide open five furlong “Dash”.

Duke Of Firenze won this very race back in 2013 when he was sent off the 5/1 favourite and he invariably runs a very good race here at Epsom. Running off just 8 stone, he has to be in with some sort of a chance.

Pettochside has already won twice this season and he ran a cracker in this race in 2018 when he finished second. Again, don’t let the large odds put you off backing him.

4.30 Epsom – Bolshoi Ballet (WIN)

The Ballysax Stakes and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner can provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with a record ninth victory in the Epsom Classic.

Taking the same route as his father Galileo, Bolshoi Ballet is bound to carry on improving and is very much the one they all have to beat.

If there are any chinks in the armour of Bolshoi Ballet then Jim Bolger’s Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Mac Swiney and Ed Dunlop’s John Leeper could be the ones that would benefit. In fact, I shall be perming these two with the favourite in order to try and land the forecast.

5.15 Epsom – Midnight’s Legacy & Koeman (E/W)

5.50 Epsom – Kimifive (E/W)
