Champions Day at Ascot was fantastic to watch, but for me personally the cherry on the cake came in Saturday’s feature race at Auteuil – the Grande Course de Haies (the French Champion Hurdle to me and you!).
Obviously I knew that the mare L’autonomie was going to be very difficult to beat, but I figured that in this very top level race, her errant jumping out to the right at all her obstacles might just cost her in the end, if somebody was handy enough to stay on her tail and take advantage. She looked rather skinny value at 3/10 considering this was her racing style.
However her realistic challengers looked rather thin on the ground I thought. I ruled many of her 10 other challengers out straight away and my own rough tissue prices on Friday evening were 1/4 L’autonomie 10/1 Paul’s Saga 12/1 Galop Marin, Porto Pollo 16/1 bar.
Imagine my amazement when the liquidity started coming into the market mid-afternoon on the Betfair Exchange and Paul’s Saga was being offered at 70’s!!! So I set the race up so that I was all green pre-off on my four picks. The favourite would return me 0.01 (and my stakes back), Galop Marin, Porto Pollo – double-figure returns, Paul’s Saga – three-figure return. The other seven runners – all RED!!!
And the rest is history as they say. Kevin Nabet meticulously tracked L’autonomie aboard the grey mare Paul’s Saga until after the last, where he snuck up the favourite’s inside and outran her up the rail. Even the Racing Blogger was gobsmacked and that is a rarity to say the least! 😀
Don’t you lot be ringing Aftertime Ansell up ok?
