The Weekend Whisper (Fri 2nd Jan)

Good evening and welcome to my new regular Friday night column The Weekend Whisper.

Each Friday I will endeavour  to bring you some pointers for the weekend ahead along with an advised staking plan. I’ll also advise you which bookies are offering the best prices at the time of posting.

My first selection runs on Saturday at Wincanton.  The horse in question is the Venetia Williams trained Arthur’s Oak ridden by Liam Treadwell. Whilst most of tomorrow morning’s attention will be focused on her other runner Relax in the 32Red Casino Handicap Chase at Sandown this novice chase entry could quite easily slip under the radar.

Running over an inadequate trip three weeks ago Arthur’s Oak put in a respectable fourth place behind  Top Gamble. He’s sure to come on from that seasonal debut and his OR 123 puts him bang up there as one of the main protagonists in this race. His back form shows stamina in abundance and this 2m 4f race looks right up his street.

With question marks over Viva Steve’s willingness to put it all in and the fact that Atlantic Roller might prefer the smaller obstacles an each-way punt on Arthur’s Oak is the percentage call here.

My second selection Saturday is the Keith Reveley trained yard favourite Categorical. This popular veteran is a stalwart at Newcastle having won there four times and has been runner-up four times. That’s a very hard statistic to ignore and even though he often gets tapped for speed and hits some flat spots you will find that Categorical is always running on as the others tie up. I expect James Reveley to ride him with kid gloves then pick them all off at the business end.

TTW advises:

1pt e/w Arthur’s Oak 2.05 Wincanton (5/1 Paddy Power).

0.5 pt e/w Categorical 1.40 Newcastle (6/1 Coral).
