Newton Abbot (Monday)

newtonabbot

I don’t know about you but I can almost taste the NH season “proper” as October looms on the horizon. This really is one of my favourite times of the year for horse racing both on the flat and the jumps. Plus you don’t get baked in the sun (doesn’t agree with my bald head) and it’s not too cold either. Perfect!

Here is today’s preview of the racing at Newton Abbot from the racecourse website and underneath are my own fancies.

Abbot’s Whispers – Race Preview Monday 29th September

2.30: This looks an excellent opportunity for Auteuil hurdle winner SON DU BERLAIS to open his account for his new yard. Irish point winner Nordic Run could be a danger on debut for his new connections, whilst Val D’arc has to be respected on his efforts at Worcester in May when third over two miles.

3.00: The Evan Williams trained GOING CONCERN has made a promising start to his chasing career this season placed twice this summer and landing his first victory at Cartmel last month we expect him to make it back-to-back wins today. Dr Richard Newland’s hurdle winner Lysino will pose a threat he was placed on chasing debut at Worcester earlier this month and Amuse Me may have disappointed of late but he knows how to win and comes from a yard who are in great form.

3.30: This looks an open contest MARJU’S QUEST made it a hat-trick of victories when landing a handicap at Worcester ten days ago and comes here bang on. Alan King’s Laser Blazer won a novices’ hurdle in July and whilst disappointing on the Flat at Salisbury last time could be a danger here. Song Light has been very consistent and is knocking on the door.

4.00: Keltus won a juvenile hurdle for Paul Nicholls and put in a great effort when fourth in the Fred Winter at the Cheltenham festival he will be a danger on chasing debut. COURT MINSTREL is the winner of two bumpers and four hurdle races including a very competitive handicap at Aintree this spring we fancy him to land this four runner chase on fences debut. Ladies Dancing and No No Cardinal look to have to find a lot more to trouble the market leaders.

4.30: Key To Milan won easily here over the distance last month and will be all out to make it back-to-back wins. We burden the in-form David Pipe’s NORTHERN BAY with our selection this French recruit was second here in a maiden to the useful Upsanddowns earlier this month and should go well on handicap debut. Herecomesthebride failed to deliver last time when favourite at Fontwell but she is a threat here.

5.00: The Karen George trained Call Me April returned here following a 463-day absence when finishing second to Party Girls in a selling handicap over the distance and may be better for that outing. WESTERN MOVIE has been progressing and ran well when second in a handicap at Uttoxeter last week we expect him to go one better here. Agapanthus is a five time winner on the Flat and won a hurdle race in Jersey in June returned there again to win on the Flat a month later he could land a place here.

5.30: Lord Lescribaa is no stranger to success here having won four times at the Devon track so must be respected. Mark Gillard’s GORTEENWOOD is the form horse in the race and he is three wins from six for his new stable including twice here over 2m5f. Volio Vincente looks the main danger if he reproduces his form here last year when winning over the distance returns to action here following a break.

My Newton Abbot fancies:

2.30 Newt- Son Du Berlais (win).

3.00 Newt- Gud Day (e/w).

3.30 Newt- Marju’s Quest (e/w).

4.00 Newt- Keltus (win).

4.30 Newt- Taste The Wine (e/w).

5.00 Newt- Call Me April & Supernoverre (e/w).

5.30 Newt- Baily Storm (e/w).

Champagne Supernoverre? 😉
